The History of the Golden Horn: From Byzantium to Today

The Golden Horn has been at the center of Istanbul’s story for over two and a half millennia. This natural harbor shaped the destiny of three great empires.

Why “Golden Horn”?

The name comes from its horn-like shape and the golden glow of the setting sun reflecting on its waters. In Turkish, it’s called Halic, meaning “estuary.”

Byzantine Era

As the natural harbor of Constantinople, the Golden Horn was protected by a massive chain stretched across its mouth to keep enemy ships out. It was the commercial lifeline of the Byzantine Empire.

Ottoman Era

After 1453, the Ottomans built shipyards, palaces, and mosques along its shores. The Halic Shipyard became one of the most important naval facilities in the empire.

Today
