Karakoy vs Eminonu Boarding Points

Passenger ferries moored at the Eminonu waterfront in Istanbul with crowds and taxis on the quay

Both piers board the same boat on the same sailing. Karakoy is the departure point and the final arrival point, so boarding there gives you the full two and a half hours. Eminonu picks up ten minutes later and drops off ten minutes earlier, and sits on the Sultanahmet side of the Galata Bridge. The choice comes down to where you are staying, not to what you get on the water.

Which one should you choose?

Board at Eminonu if you are staying in Sultanahmet or Fatih. This covers most first time visitors. The pier is a short walk or one tram stop from the historic peninsula hotels, and you avoid crossing the Galata Bridge on foot twice. The twenty minutes you give up is spent sailing between two piers that are 500 metres apart, so you lose very little of the actual route.

Board at Karakoy if you are staying in Beyoglu, Galata, Karakoy or Taksim. You get the full sailing and you are already on that side of the water. From Taksim, the F1 funicular reaches Kabatas and the T1 tram runs to Karakoy, or the Tunel drops you at the top of the hill for a short walk down.

Board at Karakoy if the boat is the point. Twenty extra minutes on the water for the same ticket price is a straightforward gain if you are there for the cruise rather than for Miniaturk.

Board at Eminonu if you are combining the cruise with the bazaars. The Spice Bazaar is directly behind the pier and the Grand Bazaar is ten minutes uphill. Landing at Eminonu at 14:50 puts you in both with the afternoon left.

Getting to Karakoy Pier

Karakoy sits at the northern foot of the Galata Bridge, at Fermeneciler Caddesi 26.

By tram. The T1 line stops at Karakoy. The line runs from Kabatas through Karakoy and Eminonu into Sultanahmet, so it connects the pier to almost everywhere a visitor stays on the European side.

From Taksim. Take the F1 funicular down to Kabatas, then two stops on the T1. Or walk down Istiklal to Tunel, take the Tunel funicular to Karakoy, and you land two minutes from the pier.

On foot from Galata. Ten minutes downhill from Galata Tower, steeply. Fifteen minutes back up.

By ferry. Karakoy is a working ferry terminal on the scheduled city lines, so if you are coming from Kadikoy or Uskudar on the Asian side, you can arrive by boat and change to the cruise.

Karakoy itself is worth arriving early for. The streets behind the pier hold the coffee shops, galleries and small restaurants that made the district’s reputation over the last decade, and fifteen minutes there before boarding is better spent than fifteen minutes standing at the pier.

Getting to Eminonu Pier

Eminonu sits at the southern foot of the Galata Bridge, where the Golden Horn meets the Bosphorus, on the historic peninsula.

By tram. The T1 stops at Eminonu. From Sultanahmet it is two stops, or a fifteen minute walk downhill.

On foot from Sultanahmet. Fifteen to twenty minutes down past the Spice Bazaar and the New Mosque. Downhill on the way there, uphill on the way back, which is worth knowing before you plan to walk both ways after a two hour cruise.

By ferry. Eminonu is one of the busiest ferry terminals in the city, with scheduled services to Kadikoy, Uskudar and up the Bosphorus. If you are coming from the Asian side, you arrive here.

By Marmaray. Sirkeci station is a five minute walk and connects under the Bosphorus to Uskudar in four minutes, which is the fast route from the Asian side when the weather has stopped the ferries.

The area around Eminonu pier is dense and busy in a way Karakoy is not. The Spice Bazaar, the New Mosque and the fish sandwich boats are all within two minutes, and so are the crowds.

Does it matter for the view?

Barely, and this is the point most people worry about unnecessarily.

The two piers are on opposite ends of the same bridge, roughly 500 metres apart. The stretch of water between them holds no landmarks that the audio guide covers. All twenty numbered points on the route lie further up the Golden Horn, and both boarding groups see every one of them.

What you get by boarding at Karakoy is ten minutes of the Galata Bridge crossing at each end of the sailing, which is a pleasant view of the peninsula skyline but is also something you can see for free by walking the bridge.

Seat choice is the more relevant question. Boarding at Karakoy means you are on the boat first and can pick a position on the upper deck or a window seat below before the Eminonu passengers board. On a busy summer sailing that is a real advantage.

The full landmark sequence is set out on the route and stops page.

Which pier for the return?

Eminonu is the first drop off and Karakoy is the final arrival, so you can effectively choose where to end up.

This is more useful than it sounds. If you boarded at Karakoy but plan to spend the evening in Sultanahmet, get off at Eminonu on the way back and save yourself the bridge crossing. Nobody minds, and it puts you at the Spice Bazaar rather than at the foot of the Galata hill.

The reverse also works. Board at Eminonu, stay on to Karakoy, and finish the afternoon with coffee in Karakoy or a walk up to Galata Tower.

Ticket desks and buying on the day

Both piers operate ticket desks and both sell right up to departure, subject to availability.

Booking online is the recommended route regardless of which pier you use. You receive a QR e-ticket by email, show it on your phone at either pier, and you are inside the free cancellation window of 24 hours before departure. Buying at the desk on the day gives you neither the guaranteed slot nor the cancellation terms.

Whichever pier you select, arrive fifteen minutes before your departure time. For Eminonu passengers that means 09:10 boarding needs a 08:55 arrival, not a 09:00 one.

Common mistakes with the two piers

Confusing Karakoy with Kadikoy. These are different places on different continents. Karakoy is on the European side at the Galata Bridge. Kadikoy is on the Asian side, twenty minutes away by ferry. The names look similar in writing and sound similar to an English speaker, and people book taxis to the wrong one.

Arriving at the wrong end of the bridge. The Galata Bridge is 490 metres long and walking it takes ten minutes, which is exactly enough to miss a sailing. Check which pier your booking names.

Assuming the pier is the private cruise dock. Both Karakoy and Eminonu are large working ferry terminals with multiple operators. Look for the ticket desk by name rather than joining the nearest queue.

Underestimating the walk from Sultanahmet. It is fifteen to twenty minutes downhill to Eminonu and longer coming back up. In July at midday that is a real consideration, and the tram costs the price of one Istanbulkart tap.

Timing the boarding rather than the departure. The fifteen minute rule applies to your pier’s time, not the sailing’s departure time.

Which pier suits which traveller

First time visitor staying in Sultanahmet. Eminonu. Shorter walk, and the bazaars are on your way home.

Photographer. Karakoy. Board first, take a rail position on the upper deck before the boat fills.

Family with young children. Eminonu if you are on the peninsula, since twenty fewer minutes on board is an advantage rather than a loss with small children, and the pier is closer to most family hotels.

Anyone going mainly for Miniaturk. Either, but take the 09:00 sailing so you dock as the park opens at 10:00. Details of the stop are on the Miniaturk page.

Cruise ship passenger with limited time. Karakoy, since Galataport is a short walk away and you get the full sailing without a bridge crossing.

Anyone staying on the Asian side. Eminonu, which is where the Kadikoy and Uskudar ferries land and where the Marmaray reaches the European shore.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Karakoy or Eminonu?

Neither is better on the water, since both board the same boat on the same sailing and see all twenty landmarks. Karakoy gives you twenty more minutes on board and first choice of seat. Eminonu is closer to Sultanahmet and the historic peninsula. Choose by where you are staying.

Can you board at one pier and get off at the other?

Yes. Eminonu is the first drop off on the return and Karakoy is the final arrival, so you can board at Karakoy and land at Eminonu, or the reverse, depending on where you want to be afterwards.

How far apart are Karakoy and Eminonu?

About 500 metres, at opposite ends of the Galata Bridge. Walking between them takes around ten minutes, or one stop on the T1 tram.

Is Karakoy the same as Kadikoy?

No, and this is a common and expensive mix up. Karakoy is on the European side at the northern end of the Galata Bridge. Kadikoy is on the Asian side, about twenty minutes away by ferry. The Golden Horn cruise does not board at Kadikoy.

How early should you arrive?

Fifteen minutes before your pier’s time, not the sailing’s departure time. Eminonu passengers on the morning sailing board at 09:10, so arrive by 08:55.

Is there parking at either pier?

Both piers sit in dense central districts where street parking is impractical. The T1 tram serves both directly and is the sensible way to arrive. If you are driving, use a car park and take the tram the last leg.

Can you buy tickets at both piers?

Yes, both have ticket desks selling until departure subject to availability. Booking online first is recommended, since it secures the slot and comes with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Which pier is less crowded?

Karakoy is the quieter of the two as a district, though both are working ferry terminals. Eminonu is one of the busiest transport hubs in Istanbul and the area around it is dense at almost any hour. If crowds bother you, board at Karakoy.
